Managing Your Time So You Don't Run Out of Time

Doesn’t it feel like sometimes 24 hours in a day just isn’t enough to do everything that you’d like to do? Do you ever think some days, “Where has the time gone?” If these thoughts have crossed your mind, then I’d like to welcome you to a club I call “Adulthood.” It’s nothing to be scared of, trust me! It’s just time to learn a little bit about time management and prioritizing.

Learning how to manage your time comes with age just like how responsibilities come with age. However, once you’ve mastered the skill, you’ll feel like you have all the time in the world as opposed to not enough. These three tips can help changes the way you organize your duties will surely see you through!

Make a list. It’s always better to physically see what you have to do as opposed to keeping a mental list. Create a “To-do” list with everything you need to complete in the upcoming week or month. If it works for you to plan further out in the future, by all means, but for those who are new to this, it may get overwhelming to see such a large list of duties. Make sure to keep the list in plain view, somewhere you’re sure to notice it like your dressing table, refrigerator, or even on your mirror in your bathroom (I’m guilty of that one.) Once you’ve completed something on your list, don’t forget to cross it off! Seeing crossed off tasks makes you feel accomplished (as you should) and it makes you that much motivated to work through the rest of the list.

Prioritize. Completing your tasks is important, but are they all equally important? I bet if you take a closer look at the list you’ve created, you’d be able to pinpoint which task NEEDS to be done now and which COULD be done now. Of course, the end goal is to have all of them done in a timely manner but saying you will complete all on a certain day is an unrealistic thought. Spread your tasks out, create a realistic goal and watch it all come together. No really, it’s almost like magic.

Reward Yourself. That’s right, reward yourself. In between completing each task, you should reward yourself. Why? Because it easier to give up than it is to push forward so show yourself some recognition. That could mean doing something as little as binge watching your favorite show, going to a movie or dinner with your best friends. Whatever it is, let it temporarily take you away from your assignments so that once you get back to them, you’re more than ready to hit the ground running.
