New Years Resolutions 2017: College Edition
I believe one of the biggest mistakes people make when creating a list of resolutions is they set their standards too high. While that may sound a bit pessimistic, I don’t mean for it to be. Hear me out! it isn’t pessimistic because setting a realistic goal means setting yourself up for a realistic outcome. It also leaves space for growth and for you to one day expand on that once small goal. For example, one of the most common New Years Resolutions is probably to get in shape. Of course that may be easily attainable for some but for many it isn’t. It requires a drastic change in daily activities and diet; something not everyone is ready to commit to. So rather focusing on getting in shape, a more realistic goal would be consuming less sugar or eating more vegetables. That way, you’re on track to getting in shape yet setting a goal that is in reach.
The year 2017 has only just begun and there is still plenty of time to come up with a list of resolutions that actually mean something to you. I say let’s set some goals that we plan to keep. Goals that are realistic and attainable. Goals that will teach us a thing or two about ourselves and this thing called LIFE. Most importantly, let’s set some goals that will help us grow and become an even better version of ourselves.
For those of you that need a little boost and just want a few ideas of where to get started, here’s a few resolutions that I thought would be great for young women and college students alike!
• Learn to understand politics.
I think we can all agree that 2016 was a pretty politically tumultuous year. Politics can get very complicated and it can be very difficult to understand who does what and who is who. While this election year seemed to pique the interest of many from all different age groups, it’s important to keep the interest alive! Many of us don’t quite understand the duties of our local politicians and beyond. I think this makes for a great resolution because after all, they do represent the people. Shouldn’t we get to know the people that represent us? P.S.- Keeping up with current news goes hand in hand with this resolution as it helps increase your overall awareness and your knowledge as a whole.
Volunteer work is one of those things that we all say we wish we did but sometimes never find the time to do. Not because we are evil, selfish people, but simply because it’s easy to get wrapped up in your responsibilities. It’s okay to keep your eye on the prize and stop at nothing to achieve all the things you want to achieve, but why not help others along the way? There are so many individuals and organizations that need the help of volunteers. Find something you’re passionate about and dedicate a few hours for a good cause. Any little bit counts! • Visit a city you’ve never visited.
Here comes one of those clichés that I mentioned before. So this one is probably on a lot of people’s resolutions list but how can it not be. There’s no other feeling like being somewhere for the first time. Even if it means a different city in your state, if you’ve never been there before, it’s still new to you. Take a drive, a flight, a train ride with some friends for a day or maybe a few days if you can and just explore.
• Take a step towards a healthier lifestyle.
This doesn’t mean go on a diet or exercise for X amount of hours a week. It simply means incorporate something in your lifestyle that you know will benefit you that you haven’t before. For example, eat an extra piece of fruit a day, take multi-vitamins everyday, or maybe even get an extra hour of sleep each day. Each of these suggestions are small changes that lead to a larger outcome. Remember what I said about baby steps, it leaves room for improvement! Who knows, maybe by next year you’ll be competing in a marathon!
• Less texting and more calling again.
This will probably be the toughest on the list for most of you. Remember when we all used to call people if we wanted to speak to them? Me neither. Of course texting is quick and easy but I think it’s time to get back in touch with actually having conversations with people. Phone calls are so much more personable and believe it or not, they do help with conversational skills, something you need when on an interview or just in general!
• Learn a new skill.
Have you ever wanted to learn how to speak Spanish? Want to finally learn how to cook? Or maybe you’ve always wanted to take a salsa class? Well then do it! Nothing can hold you back but yourself. Could’ve, should’ve, would’ve are words that you will not be saying this year!
• Make a friend outside of school or work.
This one may be hard for some and not so much for others. For the most part, a lot of our friends are past classmates, past co-workers, current classmates, current co-workers. Don’t ditch them, yet. Just kidding but here comes another cliché, “Step outside of your comfort zone.” Make a new friend outside of places you frequent like work and school. What about the girl/guy that works at your local coffee shop? Or that girl you see at yoga class every other week but you never say anything other than “Hi, how are you?” to. Take a minute and ask about that person’s day, maybe exchange phone numbers. You both might have a lot in common than you think. It also gives you a chance to practice your networking skills.
• Keep an open mind.
You’ll never know unless you try. Growing up is a learning process and with that being said, as you get older you learn to love things and you learn to dislike things. The same things you liked ten years ago aren’t necessarily the same things you like today. The same things you would consider two weeks ago might not be the same thing you would consider today. As you get older you learn something new about yourself everyday therefore, give yourself the chance to determine who you are and who you’re becoming. The person you are and the person you may be becoming might not be the same person and that’s okay. The only way you’ll figure it out is by keeping an open mind.
These are just a few ideas to get you started with your meaningful New Years Resolutions. Remember, keep them small and don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
